Let’s watch ‘Hello! Project 2014 WINTER ~GOiSU MODE~’, one of the two 2014 winter tours of Hello! Project featuring Morning Musume, Berryz Koubou, C-ute, S/mileage and Juice=Juice, and of course the Hello! Pro Kenshuusei.
The concert opens with all the groups performing Morning Musume’s Egao no Kimi wa Taiyou sa’.
This was possibly the worst song choice to open a concert with. The performance is basically Morning Musume with the other H!P groups as backup dancers/singers, backup dancers/singers who look bored out of their minds. Even some of the Morning Musume members looked a little bored performing it. It’s just one of those songs that’s nice to listen to, but the performance is too boring. Couldn’t wait until this was over.
Following is everyone performing Berryz Koubou’s ‘Cha Cha SING’, one of songs that is perfect for live performances. Berryz and C-ute take the lead and everyone comes to life during the song. No more bored faces, but all members having fun which is a lovely sight. The previous performance is completely forgotten.
I think the styling of these outfit and hairstyles looks great on the members, they all look very cute. Especially Berryz looks great in bright pink.
Next up is a very short introduction video of the H!P members after which follows an immediate Hello! Pro Kenshuusei performance of their original song ‘Oheso no Kuni Kara Konnichiwa’, with H!P members as backup dancers in the background. Not a big fan of either the Kenshuusei or the song, but I thought the performance was okay.
After that there’s Morning Musume performing their song ‘What Is LOVE?’, but is for some reason done in the ‘Egao no Kimi wa Taiyou sa’ outfits. They show of their dancing skills, and a little less their singing skills. Especially standing out were Ayumi, Mizuki and Kanon with some very bright smiles.
Juice=Juice follows with an impressive performance of ‘Ijiwaru Shinaide Dakishimete yo’ showing of their singing skills. Karin, Sayuki and Tomoko do most of the singing and sound great, although sometimes slightly cracking, but doing very well even so.
This is followed by S/mileage performing ‘Ee ka?!’ an okay performance, I think. The song is a bit chaotic and so is the performance.
After that follows C-ute with a great performance of ‘Tokai no Hitorigurashi’. All the members sound great, but especially Airi sounds good in this performance. They all look very cute in the outfits that go with the single, especially Mai and Nacky!
Then it is Berryz Koubou performing ‘Otona na no yo!’, I really love this song! They do a great performance of it, the girls sound really good I think. The outfits are all together a complete mismatch though, but they look good on the girls separately.
After every group has performed an A-side of their current single, they continue with some previous single performances. Juice=Juice starts in what looks like some super pretty white versions of their single outfits with a good performance of ‘Romance no Tochuu’, really impressed with them.
After that follows S/mileage with one of my least favorite S/mileage’s songs ‘Yattaru-chan’, like ‘Ee ka?!’ it’s a pretty chaotic song, but they do an okay performance. I really dislike Kana’s talking parts, but that will never change. The singing parts sound good enough.
Morning Musume follows with a good performance of ‘Ai no Gundan’, showing off their dancing skills. The members with most solos, Riho and Sakura sound good, no cringe-worthy lines this time. After that follows Makoto with a short MC, mentioning this live will be on the DVD.
It follows with C-ute performing ‘Kanashiki Amefuri’, a very good performance of the girls. At this point I’m kind of wishing they had picked some older singles (or any other songs really) to perform since I’ve heard all of these songs more than enough at this point. Also wondering why Juice=Juice got new costumes while all the other groups are performing in the single outfits… I’d love to have seen the other girls in prettier version of their single outfits…
At this point I have also noticed that the other H!P members who performed before them are back up dancing on the higher parts of the stage, which honestly just looks really awkward and doesn’t add anything to the performance at all.
Berryz Koubou follows with a performance of ‘ROCK Erotic’, I really love this Berryz song… The costumes look great on the girl and they do an okay performance, with some of the girls sounding a bit tired at some points.
Makoto is back for another MC, introducing Bitter & Sweet, the group featuring Asahi Tasaki and the other girl whose name I don’t remember. I only know one song of Asahi’s solo time which I really liked, but other than that I never really paid attention to her. They perform a song with the same name as their group. The first time I’m hearing this one, I’m loving the natural sound of the song. Their singing could use some improving, but I really like the song! It is really an adorable performance of the two of them… I’m definitely going to check out some of their other songs.
After that there’s two solo performances. First up is C-ute’s Nacky with a performance of ‘Egao ni Namida ~THANK YOU! DEAR MY FRIENDS~’. The performance shows she isn’t the greatest singer, but she is absolutely adorable. She looks so happy and energetic during the performance which just makes it so much fun to watch. The song was a good choice for her I think. A very upbeat sound which goes very well with her energy.
After this one there’s Morning Musume’s Sayumi Michishige doing a performance of Erina Mano’s ‘My Days For You’. Like Nacky, she isn’t a very good singer, but she handles the song pretty okay. Definitely not one of her most memorable performances, at some points she misses/forgets some lyrics and her singing get worse in the end. Not really DVD material, but they used it anyway.
Next up is a medley, starting with Juice=Juice performing the Kenshuusei song ‘Ten Made Nobore!’ in some hideous-ly matched outfits. They sounds good enough in this performance, but not outstanding or anything. Can’t help but notice how cute Yuka looks, despite the horrible outfit.
After them follows Morning Musume with ‘A B C D E-cha E-cha shitai’. Seriously, what’s with these outfits? These aren’t as bad as the Juice=Juice ones… But those glittery head accessories are really horrible. Okay performance, not all the members sound that good.
C-ute follows with a very cute performance of ‘Bagel ni Ham & Cheese’. They’re still sounding great, and their outfits aren’t as bad as the previous ones, but still pretty bad. They really show of their singing skills without sounding tired from any of the previous performances.
After that is Berryz Koubou with a performance of ‘Sayonara Usotsuki no Watashi’. I think in these performances you can really see that Berikyuu are the more experienced groups. Berryz is also still sounding good, not tired. Still the horrible outfits though.
Juice=Juice follows with a performance of ‘Samidare Bio ga Samidareru’, not a big fan of the song. Juice=Juice sounding good though. Wondering where S/mileage is.
Oh there are. They perform ‘Atarashii Watashi ni Nare!’ one of my favorite newer S/mileage songs. They perform with some very weak vocals though from some of the members. Still the bad outfits.
They immediately follow with ‘Watashi, Choito Kawaii Urabanchou’ losing the white jackets which makes the costumes slightly better. One of my favorite S/mileage’s songs this is.
C-ute follows with a performance of ‘Adam to Eve no Dilemma’, they do very well. These costumes look so so much better without the horrible white jackets, thank goodness… Even though I like the song, I wish they would have picked something different.
Berryz Koubou after that with a good performance of ‘Motto Zutto Issho ni Itakatta’, again kind of wishing they would have picked something different, but what can you do?
Morning Musume ends the medley with a strong performance of ‘One Two Three’. Although the costumes do look better now, I wish they would get of that glittery cowboy head of Ayumi, it’s horrible. After all this, this didn’t feel like a medley really, too many different songs and no together-ness of any of it.
They end the concert with all the groups performing ‘Kacchoi Uta’, a very strong and energetic performance. The members don’t look tired at all and look very lively. No solo lines except one for Airi and one for Risako, both showing off their powerful vocals. They still sound great after all this and I think it’s a great way to show that Berikyuu are the seniors now.
Thoughts: The concert had some great performances, but they could have done so much more with the song choices. A lot of recent songs that we’ve heard more than enough at this point while there is so much choice. I really wish they would have done some older songs, or maybe some b-sides or album songs. Because of this the setlist didn’t really have an impact on me. I was also a little disappointed in the medley, which didn’t feel like a medley at all.
As for the groups, I was mostly impressed by Juice=Juice, I’m not a big fan of them but I do really like some of their songs. I don’t watch a lot of their lives, but seeing them perform like this was great. From here on they can only get better!
I was also happy to see that Berikyuu had a very good performance level, above the other H!P groups… If only they had picked some more interesting songs… The idea that upcoming winter tour will be the last one to feature Berryz Koubou is kind of weird. I really hope that by that time Tsunku will introduce a new talented H!P group. At that time C-ute will be the real seniors.
As usual there wasn’t really done anything interesting with the stage… Well, except the awkward back up dancing on the higher parts of the stage, but that really didn’t add anything and you couldn’t really see it anyway on the DVD. As for the costumes, they were okay but not outstanding. The medley outfits with the white jackets looked awful though.
All in all, an okay concert. Could have done with a more interesting setlist, and possibly some even better outfits. That’s it for now!
